Stop Ventilating Your Beehives: Why the "Old-Timers" Have It Wrong
If you ask ten "old-timer" beekeepers how to help bees survive a blistering summer heatwave, nine of them will tell you the exact same thing: “Open up the hive! Put in a screened bottom board, crack the inner cover, drill some holes, and get that air moving.”
It sounds like common sense. After all, when we get hot, we turn on a fan or open a window.
But as someone who does two to three feral honey bee removals every single week from spring through early summer, I am here to tell you that the bees themselves want the exact opposite. When you pull a wild colony out of a dark, uninsulated wall or a hollow tree, you learn very quickly how bees actually choose to live. They don't want your cross-breezes. In fact, by ventilating your hives, you are making them work twice as hard—and actively helping their worst enemies thrive.
Here is the truth about why you need to close up your hives this summer.
1. Look at Wild Colonies: They Hate Drafts
When I cut open a feral hive, do I see a structure filled with multiple open ventilation holes? Never.
Honey bees will actively use propolis (bee glue) to seal up every single tiny crack, crevice, and knot-hole in their cavity. They choose to leave only one main entrance at the very bottom for air exchange. If bees naturally seal themselves into a tight, draft-free box in the wild, why on earth do we force them into drafty, ventilated setups in our apiaries? They know how they want to manage their environment; our "help" just breaks their system.
2. The Myth of the "Swarm Beard"
We’ve all seen it: a hot July afternoon where a massive beard of bees hangs off the front porch of the hive. The old-school reaction is panic. “They’re overheating! They’re getting ready to swarm! Quick, add a screened bottom board!”

This is completely misunderstanding bee behavior. Those bees aren't getting ready to pack up and leave. They are simply getting out of the way.
Think about it like a crowded room. If the indoor temperature rises, a bunch of individuals step outside onto the patio. By leaving the hive, they reduce the internal biogenic heat (heat generated by their bodies). More importantly, they clear out the hallways, allowing the designated "fanning bees" to efficiently control and cycle the air currents inside the colony without hitting a wall of traffic.
3. The Humidity Battle: Dehydrating Nectar
This is where the math completely exposes the flaw in the ventilation argument.
When bees bring fresh nectar into the hive, it sits at roughly 71% moisture. To cure it into honey that won't spoil, they have to dry it all the way down to 18% moisture.
To accomplish this monumental task, the bees create a highly sophisticated, localized thermodynamic engine inside the hive. They control the airflow strictly through that single main entrance to evaporate the moisture.
Now, imagine it’s a humid summer day, and the outside air is sitting at 75% humidity. If you crack open the top cover or use a screened bottom board, you are flooding the hive with damp, humid outside air. You are completely destroying the microclimate they just spent hours creating. Instead of letting them efficiently cycle air, you've forced them to fight a never-ending battle against the outside atmosphere. You are making your bees work significantly harder just to make a single drop of honey.
4. You Are Promoting Varroa Mite Growth
If the humidity and thermodynamic arguments don't convince you, the pest data should.
Keeping a hive tightly sealed creates a microclimate with naturally higher temperatures and higher levels of carbon dioxide CO2. Humans might hate that environment, but bees are entirely adapted to it.

Science shows that Varroa destructor mites do not reproduce well and experience higher mortality rates when the colony's internal temperature stays consistently warm and the CO2 levels remain elevated.
When you add screened bottoms and top vents, you flush out that heavy CO2, lower the internal temperature, and create the perfect, breezy breeding ground for Varroa mites. By trying to cool the bees off, you are actively promoting mite population growth.
The Takeaway: Trust the Bees
I know this flies right in the face of everything you’ve read on online forums or been told by local club mentors. It can be terrifying to leave a hive closed up when the ambient temperature hits 95°F.
But the biology doesn't lie, and the structural design of wild hives doesn't lie either. Stop treating your bees like humans. They don't want a screen door or an open window. Give them a solid, unventilated box, make sure they have a nearby water source so they can bring in water to evaporatively cool the hive on their own terms, and let them do what they have perfected over millions of years.
Drop the vents. Let the bees bee.
